The Climate Change Accountability Act is currently moving through Parliament. The bill asks Canada to commit to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 and define Canada’s approach to climate change moving into the climate treaty negotiations in Copenhagen.

350.org Day of Action, Oct 24 Picture 5

Climate Action Network is partnering with 350.org to help with the Global Day of Action on October 24.  The theme of the day is to organizing an action incorporating the number 350 at an iconic place in their community, and then upload a photo of their event to 350.org website. 350.org collects these images from around the world and, with your help, delivers them to the media, world leaders, and elected officials.  Actions are being planned across Canada, from Vancouver to Guelph to Ottawa.

Council of Canadians has also posted information about the Oct 24 Day of Action:

350 refers to the amount of atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations (measured in parts per million volume or ppmv) that we need to achieve if we want to reduce the risk of catastrophic global warming.  Today our current global greenhouse gas concentrations are 385ppmv.

Kairos Week of Action Oct 17 – 24 Kairos

KAIROS is urging all church communities to participate in a week of action to support climate justice.  Hold a special climate-justice themed service on October 18 where people have the opportunity to sign the KyotoPlus petition.  This week is also at time to secure more signatures from your family, community, and workplace.  And make sure to take part in your community’s 350.org Day of Action on Climate Change!

Powershift, Ottawa, Oct 23 – Oct 26 Picture 7

On October 23-26, 2009, over 1000 young people from across the country will converge on Ottawa to take a message of bold, comprehensive and immediate federal climate action to Parliament Hill. Power Shift will be two days of training, strategy and action and one mass lobby day to hold our elected officials accountable to for their part to solve the climate crisis, and to build a cohesive and effective youth climate movement. This will be the largest-ever gathering of young people on the environment in the history of this country.   Find out more: www.powershiftcanada.org

Global Mass Day of Action, Dec. 12

On December 12 there will be a Global Day of Action on Climate Change timed to take place in the middle of the international climate negotiations taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark.    Mass civil disobedience is being encouraged.  For more information go to: http://www.globalclimatecampaign.org/
